“Americanah” by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

5 stars

I had many laughs and “light bulb moments” of understanding as I turned the pages of this fast-paced novel about immigration, race, love, and the issues of African-American hair. The story is told mainly by Ifemelu, a young, ambitious, Nigerian woman, who follows her dream of immigrating to the United States, only to feel, for the first time, that she is seen as “black.” There are many entertaining and perceptive social scenes, as we follow Ifemelu and the parallel story of her Nigerian high school boyfriend, Obinze, hoping that they will reunite.
