This summer I re-read my favorite memoir, Uncommon Knowledge by Judy Lewis. It’s the fascinating true story of how Judy grew up believing she was the adopted daughter of actress Loretta Young, but how she was in fact her biological daughter by the “King of Hollywood,” Clark Gable. This is no Mommie Dearest story, but rather one of what one woman had to do in order to survive in the 1930s Hollywood studio system and in that era’s strict social conventions, and, ultimately, how her choices affected her daughter. I would recommend this memoir to anyone interested in the golden age of Hollywood or movies in general.
