“Marmee and Louisa: The Untold Story of Louisa May Alcott and Her Mother” by Eve LaPlante

5 stars

LaPlante presents a fascinating look at a woman author in a male-dominated world. Both Louisa May Alcott and her mother had to overcome challenges because of their gender. They each had to survive in a society in which women were relegated to home and family. Much like the society in Alcott’s most famous work, Little Women, the society in which the Alcotts lived frowned upon women working outside the home and creating identities separate from father or husband. An interesting and intimate glimpse into this time through the lens of gender.
