Beyond the Bright Sea by Lauren Wolk is a beautifully written story of a young girl’s quest to discover her roots. Set in Massachusetts on the Elizabeth Islands in the 1920s, the book tells the story of 12-year-old Crow, who, with the help of Osh (the man who raised her) and Miss Maggie (their neighbor), sets off to find where she came from and what happened to her parents. The trip, though, places them all in danger. Although this book is written for older elementary and middle school readers, adults too will be swept into Crow’s story. In addition to the mystery and intrigue of the search, there is a beautiful father-daughter relationship between Crow and Osh, showing that it isn’t just DNA that makes someone your parent.
