“The Last Watchman of Old Cairo” by Michael David Lukas

5 stars

Have you ever had a book just call to you as you perused the library shelves? For whatever reason, this one just stood out for me and it was truly a serendipitous find. It is three stories interwoven, moving from events of a thousand years ago to the present. The narrator is a half-Jewish, half-Muslim-American student who is the nexus of the novel. This is a fascinating, illuminating novel that is very much based on real events.
